Life Interrupted

Howdy folks,

I've wanted to make this particular strip for some time now, as it is an issue very close to my heart... which might help explain why it's 2 weeks late.

Please support cancer research.

These days it seems everyone has been touched by this deadly illness, be it personally or through a loved one.  Medical science has made a lot of breakthroughs over the decades, making it possible to cure certain cancer types, and provide improved quality of life of those who are terminal.

Wherever you are in the world, there are many ways you can contribute to this great cause.  Here in Australia, we have a fundraiser for men's cancer research called Movember.  The idea is that for the whole of November, men do not shave their moustache to raise awareness, while people donate towards their team to raise funds.  If you would like to donate towards Movember, there is still time left.  Following the link below will take you to my Movember page where you will be able to donate towards the team of Mo-bro's that I am in.

Together we can save lives, pretty cool huh?

Animation Schmanimation

Greetings folks,

Hope you liked last weeks attempt at animation, it's definitely a direction I plan to head down one day with Minions.  However to get there I first need the right tools, and since I've budgeted $0 for the creation of this comic then I need to get crafty.  So I'm in the process of creating a comic creation tool that allows me to do single cell and key frame animation using all the standard Minions graphics.

Here's a quick progress shot in case you're interested:

So where to after animation?  If for some reason I find that animation isn't enough, I may have a crack at making a point-and-click adventure game for the PC or Android.  Sorry Apple, since it costs money to sign up then I'm afraid that excludes you... though I doubt you'll go bankrupt without me ;)

Till next time.

A quick shout out

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd take a moment to give a quick thanks to all of you for reading and passing on the word to your friends and family.  Minions readership has been growing exponentially over the past 3 weeks, and so I thought I would give a quick acknowledgement to my growing but loyal readers in Finland!

Wherever you all are however, it's great to have you on board.

Till next time.

Intermission

Howdy folks,

Firstly a big thanks to all of you who have laughed along with the beginnings of Minions.  Starting a comic definitely had some ominous foreboding clouds hanging over it... will people read it?  will it miss the mark so badly that people go off their food?  Gladly the feedback says otherwise.

So where to from here?  Well now that the basic premise of the story has unfolded, our 2 buds Steve and Marty have been introduced.  So from here, be on the lookout for new characters and story lines, and be sure to tell your family, friends, pet hamster, café owner and co-workers about Minions.  Once the reader base increases enough, I'm also planning on creating a reader-directed "Choose Your Own Adventure" sub-story line for a bit of fun.

For those interested, the colour scheme I've chosen for this comic is the standard EGA palette along with 320x240 pixels per frame.  What's the significance of this?  I grew up playing games with CGA, EGA and VGA graphics, most of which in 320x240 resolution.  In case you're not quite the geek that I clearly am, these were the early days of computer game graphics.  Drawing anything during this time was difficult, particularly as nobody had the great graphics tools that we now have to make the job easier.  For Minions, I could have used a VGA palette of 256 colours, also known as "8 bit" to the retro crowd.  However 256 colours just didn't pose a big enough challenge.  EGA however has a palette of only 64 colours, and let me tell you it's quite a challenge to put them to use!

Thanks for reading, until next time.

Change of title to "Minions"

Howdy folks,

For those of you that have tracked the early beginnings of Minions, this comic originally began on Tumblr where I searched for a witty and available title.  At the time I came up with "Minions at Work" and thought I was very clever indeed.  However great minds think alike, as there is already another comic by the same name by J. Steven York.  Despite J. Steven's comic having little or no similarities to my own, in the spirit of fairness I've decided to shorten this comic's name to "Minions", as I feel this still carries the essence of the theme and humour I'm aiming for.  The URL for this comic will remain unchanged.  Having said all this, being generic carries it's own disadvantages.  There is at least one other "Minions" comic out there, which sadly appears to have fallen on it's sword in 2005.

The good news about this Minions comic however is I have plenty of content queued up and ready for release!  My goal is to post a new strip every week, along with "Intermission" posts whenever I find something worth writing about.

Hope you're enjoying the comic so far and I look forward to receiving any of your comments as we go along.

Musical Desks

The Hardest Part

“The hardest part is getting started”
I’ve made many attempts to get my web comic off the ground over the years, and every time it has fallen by the wayside, proving the above quote true every time.  However recently I was encouraged me to give it another go, and this time I believe I have found the right balance between creativity and simplicity.  My first comic was stick figures, much like xkcd.net of which I am a huge fan.  However I quickly felt I was simply rehashing Randall’s style.  So for attempt #2 I bought an expensive Wacom graphics tablet (I used to have money, now I have kids), however my perfectionism took hold and a single cartoon took weeks to get right.

So having found my preferred format, I hope you enjoy reading Minions at Work as much as I enjoy creating them.  Feel free to comment and be sure to stay in the loop.
